Many believe that training a bull terrier is an arduous task. By way of the English Terrier and Manchester Terrier, the Bull Terrier was developed from a number of other breeds. From the original two breeds listed, James Hinks added English White Terriers to the mix around 1850. Finally, after the Borzoi and Collie were added to reduce the stop, and Dalmation, Greyhound, Foxhound, Whippet, and Spanish Pointer was added to add agility and an elegant touch, the Bull Terrier was formally born.

The first Bull Terrier is known as “Lord Gladiator,” who in 1917 had no stop whatsoever. Color was added to address medical problems later. Generally speaking, Bull Terriers are healthy but have a few tendencies. Skin allergies, deafness, and other items can affect Bull Terriers. Grooming is notably easy for the breed.

Compared to earlier times, Bull Terriers are much more gentle. Linked to earlier predecessors, Bull Terriers are able to defend their owner, but are generally nice and loyal to their owner. They need structure and socialization to do well, and are not appropriate for most households. In the right situation, a Bull Terrier can be a wonderful addition to a household.

History of the Bull Terrier

The Bull Terrier breed of dog dates to around 1835 and are known for two different colored schemes, the plain white and the colored, usually brindle. Many believe that the Bull Terrier was formed by mating a Bulldog with a White English Terrier, which are now extinct, making the Bull Terrier the own relative left of the English Terrier. After many years the Bull Terrier was mated with a Spanish Pointer, to make the dog bigger in size.

The Bull Terrier’s were used for dog fighting, when dog fighting was allowed and these Bull Terrier’s were the best of the best when it came to dog fighting. These dogs needed strength and courage which Bull Terriers have plenty of. This Bull Terrier was taught to defend himself and protect anyone who owned him making these the greatest guard dog. When James Hinks produced the first white Bull Terrier in 1860 these became known as “the white cavalier” in the fighting ring.
Bull Terriers are friendly dogs, but many people think they are mean; the common misconception for most dogs that are aggressive and protective. They are protective and aggressive only when it comes to taking care of their owners and will attack any that try to do them harm. As with any dog these terriers want affection and love, but ready to attack when needed.
A colored terrier is any terrier that is not white or white and any color, however; the color part of the dog must be more than the white on the terrier. The colored Bull Terrier was voted as a separate Bull Terrier species or variety in early 1936.

The Bull Terrier was bred in the mid 1800′s as a fighting do and male companion in the United Kingdom. Since dog fighting is illegal in the United States these dogs are only for companionship. These dogs are small and only stand about 24 inches tall and weigh no more than 80 pounds in a male Bull Terrier and only 60 pounds for a female Bull Terrier. These dogs are very obedient and are extremely loyal and protective of their owners. As with any dog, Bull Terriers crave affection and love from anyone around them and are great with families. If left alone Bull Terriers can act out and get in trouble and are best for families that are home most of the time. Male Bull Terriers can be aggressive around other dogs, especially around other males; making them the only dog that needs to be in the house. Bull Terriers are easily distinguishable because of their tear dropped or egg-shaped head, with a very long nose. The neck and shoulders of the Bull Terrier are very muscular and their legs are very short. Bull Terriers are recognized as two different colors, white and colored. Colored usually refers to a dog that has more color than white, but the white can refer to a dog that is white, but may have a couple of spots of color. Many Bull Terriers will become deaf with age, many have vitamin deficiencies that need to be taken care of and some may even have obsessive compulsive disorders. Warm climates are best for Bull Terriers because they need lots of exercise, but should always be kept on a leash if there is a chance they will see other dogs because of their aggressiveness towards other dogs; it’s often best not to let Bull Terriers around other dogs at all. If you must walk a Bull Terrier walk him away from others.
